Early Life and Debut

Joy was born as Park Soo-young on September 3, 1996, in Jeju Island, South Korea. She is the eldest of three sisters. She auditioned and was cast by SM Entertainment at the SM Global Audition in Seoul in 2012. Joy was given the stage name Joy by a vocal coach.

Joy was officially introduced as the fourth member of Red Velvet on July 29, 2014. She was the only member who was not part of SM Rookies, a pre-debut training team. Red Velvet made their debut in August 2014 with the digital single “Happiness”.
